The year was 1992, and a young Kamal Khushlani who was a film enthusiast, was getting curious about the world of fashion. What started out as sourcing looks for a portfolio shoot, soon turned into an intrepid journey through the world of contemporary menswear. He called his brand Mr. Mister. Named for his favourite band, and their hit single Broken Wings was his go-to song, one that played endlessly as if on loop in his mind as he rode on his motorbike from retailer to retailer, city to city.
He faced many a door that shut in his face, as he faced dauntlessly the challenges of sometimes-rejection-but-never-hopelessness. He would constantly, as his song goes, learn to fly again.
Along this flight path, he decided to change the name of the brand; to be true to his roots and unabashedly Indian. Mufti was his zag against the zigs of the fashion world of that time. He called it Mufti because it stood for non-uniform wear.
Being young and free-spirited was his only capital and he slowly charted a course that focused on retail from wholesale over the next decade. While the rest of the world was hinged on uncertainty, in 2008 Mufti chose to expand its retail footprint, from Bandra to Bangalore.
Over the last few years, Mufti has chosen to reinvent itself to resonate even more with its consumers. Inspired by the transformation in the lives of his patrons, Khushlani searched his soul – how did we get here? Days and nights of research brought him back full circle; to the shores of his origin, Mumbai – the source of his spirit, his muse.
Thankfully all the external inputs only solidified what his heart already sang – the song of Mumbai, the city of dreams!

Constantly weaving the spirit of Mumbai into its various graphics, be it a badge or a print, Mufti endeavours to deliver the global and contemporary flavour of Mumbai while altogether avoiding the taste of ethnic kitsch that is otherwise associated with brands that are rooted in India.
What was once called a fledging flew across skies and across time. Its wingspan grows and its surge lifts it higher. But its eye is still searching, and its soul is still looking to encompass more.
